As we reflect on the life and ministry of Jesus, one of the most significant events is His crucifixion on the cross of Calvary. It was here that Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, and it is here that we find the heart of the gospel message.
In Luke 23:33, we read, "When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left." Jesus was crucified between two criminals, a poignant reminder of the sacrifice He made for us.
As Jesus hung on the cross, He was surrounded by His enemies, who mocked and ridiculed Him. In Matthew 27:39-40, we read, "Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, 'You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!'" Jesus' enemies did not understand the significance of His sacrifice, and they mocked Him as He hung on the cross.
Despite the mockery and ridicule, Jesus remained steadfast in His commitment to His Father's will. In Luke 23:34, we read, "Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.'" Jesus' prayer for forgiveness is a powerful reminder of His love and compassion for us.
As Jesus hung on the cross, He was also surrounded by His friends and family, who were grief-stricken by His suffering. In John 19:25-27, we read, "Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, 'Woman, here is your son,' and to the disciple, 'Here is your mother.'" Jesus' concern for His mother and His disciples is a poignant reminder of His love and care for us.
As Jesus hung on the cross, He also had a conversation with one of the criminals who was crucified with Him. In Luke 23:40-43, we read, "The other criminal rebuked him. 'Don’t you fear God,' he said, 'since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.' Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.'" The criminal's request is a powerful reminder of the hope and salvation that Jesus offers us.
Jesus' response to the criminal is also significant. In Luke 23:43, we read, "Jesus answered him, 'Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.'" Jesus' promise to the criminal is a powerful reminder of the forgiveness and salvation that He offers us.
As Jesus hung on the cross, He also experienced the darkness and separation from God that our sins deserve. In Matthew 27:45-46, we read, "From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?' (which means 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?')." Jesus' cry of despair is a poignant reminder of the sacrifice He made for us.
Despite the darkness and separation, Jesus remained committed to His Father's will. In John 19:28, we read, "Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, 'I am thirsty.'" Jesus' request for water is a powerful reminder of His humanity and His sacrifice.
As Jesus hung on the cross, He also experienced the physical suffering and pain that our sins deserve. In John 19:31-37, we read, "Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a flow of blood and water." Jesus' physical suffering and pain are a poignant reminder of the sacrifice He made for us.
As Jesus hung on the cross, He also experienced the spiritual suffering and separation from God that our sins deserve. In 2 Corinthians 5:21, we read, "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." Jesus' spiritual suffering and separation from God are a powerful reminder of the sacrifice He made for us.
As Jesus hung on the cross, He also declared His final words, which are a powerful reminder of His love and care for us. In John 19:30, we read, "When he had received the drink, Jesus said, 'It is finished.' With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit." Jesus' final words are a declaration of His completed work of salvation.
As we reflect on Jesus' crucifixion on the cross of Calvary, may we be reminded of the significance of His sacrifice. May we recognize that Jesus' death on the cross was not just a tragic event, but a deliberate act of love and redemption.
In Romans 5:8, we read, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Jesus' sacrifice on the cross is a powerful reminder of God's love for us.
As we seek to follow Jesus' example, may we also seek to understand the significance of His resurrection. Jesus' resurrection is a powerful reminder of His victory over sin and death.
In 1 Corinthians 15:55-57, we read, "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." Jesus' resurrection is a powerful reminder of His victory over sin and death.
May we seek to follow Jesus' example and teachings, and may we be inspired by His love and devotion to us. May we recognize the significance of His sacrifice on the cross and the power of His resurrection.
As we reflect on Jesus' crucifixion on the cross of Calvary, may we also be reminded of the importance of forgiveness and salvation. Jesus' sacrifice on the cross is a powerful reminder of the forgiveness and salvation that He offers us.
In Ephesians 2:8-10, we read, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Jesus' sacrifice on the cross is a powerful reminder of the forgiveness and salvation that He offers us.
May we seek to follow Jesus' example and teachings, and may we be inspired by His love and devotion to us. May we recognize the significance of His sacrifice on the cross and the power of His resurrection.
As we reflect on Jesus' crucifixion on the cross of Calvary, may we be reminded of the importance of living for God's glory. Jesus' sacrifice on the cross is a powerful reminder of the importance of living for God's glory.
In 1 Corinthians 10:31, we read, "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." May we seek to live for God's glory, and may we be inspired by Jesus' love and devotion to us.
May God bless and guide you today, and may you experience His presence and power in all that you do. May you seek to follow Jesus' example and teachings, and may you be inspired by His love and devotion to you.
Amen.
