As we look around the world today, it seems that the signs Jesus spoke about are unfolding before our eyes. From raging wildfires in Los Angeles to devastating earthquakes in Thailand, Nepal, and the Philippines, many are asking the question: Are these the signs of Jesus’ coming?
For Christians who believe in the soon return of our Lord, these events remind us that the words of Christ are sure. The Bible clearly reveals that before Jesus returns, there will be visible and undeniable signs pointing to the end of the age.
1. The Promise of His Return
Before His ascension, Jesus gave His followers this promise:
“I will come again and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” — John 14:3
This promise has been the blessed hope of every generation of believers. Yet Jesus also warned that before His coming, the world would experience turmoil, deception, and calamities unlike any seen before.
The disciples once asked Him privately:
“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the world?” — Matthew 24:3
What follows in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 is known as the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus outlined the key signs that would precede His return.
2. Jesus’ Prophetic Signs
Jesus listed several major signs that would mark the final generation before His return:
- False Christs and False Prophets – “For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.” (Matthew 24:5). You can read this previous post to learn more about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and the distinction between the true and false Christs.
- Wars and Rumors of Wars – “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars… but the end is not yet.” (Matthew 24:6)
- Nation Against Nation – Ethnic and political conflicts would increase. (Matthew 24:7)
- Famines, Pestilences, and Earthquakes – Natural disasters would multiply in various places. (Matthew 24:7)
- Moral Decay and Lawlessness – “Because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:12)
- The Gospel to All the World – “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14)
These are not random occurrences; they are prophetic indicators that the return of Christ is drawing near.
3. Prophetic Fires and Disasters: Nature Groaning
Among the most visible signs today are the increasing disasters striking the earth. The world is experiencing more wildfires, heatwaves, storms, and earthquakes than in previous generations. These are not just natural phenomena—they are warnings, calling humanity to repentance.
In Luke 21:25-26, Jesus said:
“There will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity… men’s hearts failing them for fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth.”
When we see wildfires consuming entire regions, such as those that devastated Los Angeles in 2025, we are reminded of God’s warnings of coming judgment. In the Bible, fire often symbolizes purification, destruction, and divine warning and judgment. The prophet Joel used fire as a metaphor to describe the devastating effect of God’s judgment upon the land—just as locusts or armies would leave behind total desolation:
“A fire devours before them, and behind them a flame burns… the land is as the Garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness.” — Joel 2:3
Likewise, today’s wildfires serve as a solemn reminder that this world is temporary and that God is calling humanity to repentance and spiritual renewal before the great day of the Lord.
4. Earthquakes in Various Places
Jesus specifically mentioned “earthquakes in various places” as a sign of the end (Matthew 24:7). In just the last few years, we have witnessed destructive earthquakes in Thailand, Nepal, and the Philippines, shaking cities, taking lives, and displacing families.
In October 2025, southern Mindanao in the Philippines was struck by multiple powerful quakes, triggering landslides and panic across communities. Earlier, Nepal and Thailand also experienced strong tremors, reminding us that no part of the world is exempt from these shaking events.
The prophet Isaiah described the final shaking of the earth this way:
“The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.” — Isaiah 24:19
Each earthquake, each tremor, each disaster reminds us of the fragility of this world and the urgency to prepare for Christ’s second coming.
5. The Moral and Spiritual Crisis
In addition to natural disasters, the Bible also points to a moral crisis as a sign of the last days. The apostle Paul warned:
“In the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, proud, blasphemers… having a form of godliness but denying its power.” — 2 Timothy 3:1–5
Today, moral standards are collapsing, families are breaking apart, and society increasingly rejects biblical truth. Entertainment glorifies sin, truth is treated as relative, and faith in God is ridiculed. We live in the very days that Paul and Jesus described.
But amid this darkness, the light of the gospel still shines. God is raising faithful believers—those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus (Revelation 14:12).
“Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” (Revelation 14:12 KJV)
6. The Gospel to All Nations
One of the greatest and most hopeful signs is the rapid spread of the gospel message around the world. Through digital platforms, radio, television, and missionary work, the message of Christ’s salvation is reaching even the most remote regions. Organizations such as the SULADS Mission, the 1000 Missionary Movement, AFM (Adventist Frontier Missions), and many other missionary groups are helping to spread the gospel to even the most distant areas.
Every time you share a Bible verse online, write a devotional, or support missionary work, you are fulfilling prophecy. Jesus said, “And then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14)
The Seventh-day Adventist Church and many other faithful ministries are spreading the three angels’ messages of Revelation 14, calling the world to worship the Creator and prepare for Christ’s soon return. Truly, we are living in the final moments of Earth’s history.
7. The Purpose of the Signs
It is important to remember that these signs are not meant to terrify, but to prepare us. They remind us that this world is temporary and that our hope is not in earthly security but in the promise of eternal life.
Jesus said:
“When these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” — Luke 21:28
Every fire, every earthquake, every moral crisis is a reminder to lift our eyes heavenward. God is giving us time to repent, to turn away from sin, and to walk faithfully with Him.
The apostle Paul reminds us in Colossians 3:2,
“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2 KJV)
8. How Should We Respond?
- Be Spiritually Awake – Do not be lulled into complacency. Stay connected to Christ through prayer and His Word. Paul reminds us in Romans 13:11 that it is high time for us to wake up out of sleep, for now our salvation is nearer than when we believed.
Live a Holy Life – Let go of worldly attachments and prepare your heart for heaven. The apostle Peter said it this way:
“Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with His promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.” (2 Peter 3:11–13, NIV)- Share the Message – Use every opportunity to tell others that Jesus is coming soon.
- Do Not Fear – Though the world shakes and burns, our refuge is in God.
- Be Watchful and Faithful – Just as Noah prepared the ark, so must we prepare our hearts.
9. The Soon-Coming King
The Bible declares that Jesus will soon appear in power and glory:
“For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:16
That glorious day is coming soon. The same Jesus who walked the dusty roads of Galilee will return, not as a suffering servant, but as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The signs we see in the world today are like the final footsteps of the returning Savior.
10. Conclusion: Look Up, for Redemption Draws Near
As we witness wildfires in Los Angeles, earthquakes shaking nations like Thailand, Nepal, and the Philippines, and the moral chaos spreading across the world, let us not lose hope. These are not just tragic events—they are the signs that the world’s night is almost over and that the dawn of eternity is near.
The same Jesus who calmed the storm is coming again to bring peace to this troubled planet. Soon, “He will wipe away every tear,” and there will be no more death, pain, or sorrow (Revelation 21:4).
Let us prepare our hearts today, for the Signs of Jesus Coming are clear, and His promise is sure.
“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming quickly.’ Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” — Revelation 22:20
