Draw Near to Christ

In a busy, distracted world, it’s easy to feel spiritually distant from God. Yet the Bible calls us to draw near to Christ—not just in times of trouble, but every day. This closeness is the source of peace, strength, and joy in the Christian life. In this article, we’ll explore what it means to draw near to Jesus, why it’s vital, and how to do it practically in your daily walk.

1. The Biblical Call to Draw Near

The call to draw near to God is deeply rooted in Scripture. Hebrews 10:22 urges us:

“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.”

This is more than an invitation; it’s an instruction backed by a promise. God desires fellowship with us, and through the finished work of Christ, the barrier of sin that once separated us from His presence has been torn down.

Before Christ’s death, God’s presence in the Holy of Holies was inaccessible to the average person—only the high priest could enter, and only once a year. But when Jesus died, the temple veil was torn from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51), signifying that access to God is now open for all who believe.

Drawing near to Christ is no longer a matter of ritual sacrifice—it’s a matter of faith. (See Hebrews 10:1-2)

2. Why We Must Draw Near

Life apart from Christ leaves us restless and unsatisfied. We were created for communion with God, and our hearts remain empty until they are filled with His presence.

Jesus said in John 15:5:

“Without Me you can do nothing.”

Closeness to Jesus is not only for difficult times. Intimacy with Him is meant to be our daily posture. Walking closely with Him in good seasons strengthens us for the hard ones. His nearness brings peace in uncertainty, clarity in confusion, and joy in every circumstance.

He is the source of our spiritual life, strength, and purpose. To try to live a Christian life without staying close to Him is like trying to live without breathing—it simply cannot be done.

3. How to Draw Near to Christ

While the phrase “draw near” sounds simple, it requires intentional action. Distractions and spiritual battles will always compete for our attention. Here are five practical ways to stay close to Jesus:

a) Spend Time in His Word

The Bible is the living Word of God (Hebrews 4:12). Every page points us to Christ and reveals His heart. Just as physical food sustains the body, God’s Word sustains the soul. (Read John 5:39)

b) Commit to Prayer

Prayer is a two-way conversation with the Lord—sharing your heart and listening for His voice. It is more than a list of requests—it is a conversation with the Lord. Through prayer, we share our hearts with Him, listen for His guidance, and align our will with His. Philippians 4:6–7 promises that prayer brings peace that surpasses all understanding.

c) Worship with Sincerity

Worship is not just singing; it’s a lifestyle of honor to God. True worshipers, Jesus said, will worship the Father in spirit and in truth (John 4:23–24). It must come from a sincere heart, not empty ritual.

d) Walk in Obedience

Closeness to Christ is not measured by feelings but by obedience. Jesus said:

“If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).

Obedience is a tangible expression of love for Him, and as we follow His commands, our intimacy with Him deepens.

e) Surround Yourself with Fellow Believers

Christian fellowship keeps us spiritually healthy. Hebrews 10:24–25 urges us not to neglect meeting together but to encourage one another. Being in community with other believers keeps us accountable and spiritually nourished.

4. The Rewards of Drawing Near

God is not distant. James 4:8 promises:

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”

When we draw near to Christ:

  • We receive His peace – Peace that surpasses understanding.

  • We gain His strength – Courage to face trials.

  • We experience His guidance – Clarity for life’s decisions.

  • We grow in His likeness – Becoming more like Him (2 Corinthians 3:18).

5. A Lifelong Journey

Drawing near to Christ is not a one-time event—it’s a daily choice. Some days will feel easy, others like climbing a mountain. But every step toward Him is worth it. Over time, what begins as discipline turns into delight. We begin to crave His presence more than the fleeting pleasures of the world.

When we finally meet Him face to face, all distractions and struggles will fade compared to the joy of His glory. Until then, we keep moving toward Him, day by day.

"I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us." (Romans 8:18 NIV)

Final Encouragement

If you feel far from Christ today, remember this: He has not moved—you have. Like the prodigal son, the moment you take one step toward Him, He runs to meet you. His arms are open, His voice is calling, and His love has never changed. (Luke 15:11-32)

As Psalm 73:28 says:

“But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all Your works.”

May our hearts always be set on this—closer to Christ today than yesterday, and ever moving toward the fullness of His presence.
